Criteria for Declaration of Valedictorian
Watson Lake Secondary School believes that the Valedictorian must be a well-rounded individual whose accomplishments reflect the values of the community.
The recipient of this honour would have met the requirements for Graduation Transitions; have demonstrated respectful behaviour in school
as well as in the community at large; have not been suspended from school for a major offense within the last two academic school years; maintained an
attendance rate of 90% or better, excluding illness and excused absences during their Grade 12 academic school year; and have been enrolled in at least two (2) school-
delivered courses per semester in the Grade 12 academic school year.
In addition to the above-mentioned criterion, the Valedictorian shall be determined according to the following three requirements: academic standing, school spirit and community involvement.
A. Academic Standing
Average of all five provincial examinable courses and three courses in their course of study;
B. School Spirit
Provide a report outlining details of membership in good standing in at least three (3) school-sponsored clubs, teams or organizations within the three high school years and
attendance in the full academic grade 12 year at Watson Lake Secondary School.
C. Community Involvement
Provide a report outlining details of members hip in good standing in at least two (2) significant community-based groups, organizations, or committees within the three high school years and having attended at least the full academic grade 12 year at Watson Lake Secondary School.
In the event that no candidate has fully satisfied conditions B and/or C aforementioned, the candidate satisfying these best will be considered. The Valedictorian Selection Committee (VSC) will be formed no later than the last school day of the month of September of that school year.
The VSC will be comprised of the Principal, the Academic Counsellor, the Graduation Advisor, a member of the School Council, and a member of the Student Council who is not in the graduating class of that school year. In the event that more than one candidate meet the requirements, the VSC may declare more than one Valedictorian. In the event that no suitable candidate is found, the VSC may opt to decline this honour to the graduating class
